aperture below center with original cut steel hands. Brass weight driven
English bell strike movement with pendulum and weights. Case in mahogany with
fine broken arch top bonnet with Greek key on underside of arch and applied
brass floral rosette terminals with period spiked brass finial, over open
fret work front, tombstone door with original brass key escutcheon, flanked
by full turned columns with fine cast brass Corinthian capitals and cast

Waist with overlapping scroll top door with thumb molded edge, flanked by

Luman Watson Carved & Inlaid Tall Case Clock |
Polychrome & gilt painted
wooden dial with Arabic numerals, flowering basket in lunette and floral in
spandrels, seconds dial above and calendar dial below center, signed on face
L. Watson/ Cincinnati. Wooden 30 hour weight driven time, strike and date
movement with original weights and pendulum. Pasted to the interior of the
waiste (back board) is a circa 1887 inked inscription detailing this clocks
history, including its purchase from an agent of Watson by Charles Spencer of
Richwood, Spencer Co. Indiana in 1826 for $25 and the purchase of the case
from the same agent in 1830 also for $25. After descending in the family for
a period it was sold to a Geo. Elliot in 1887 for $5.00 and resold to John
Sanders that same year for $15. Includes a copy of this document and a
photograph of the clock in the Sanders home from the 1970's. The case is
cherry with dovetailed bonnet with fine broken arch top with spiral carved
rosette terminals and tulip carved central finial flanked by original turned
finials at ends, over tombstone front (no door), flanked by full turned
columns, front and rear. Panel above door has shallow intaglio floral carving
below central finial and inlaid burl cherry ovals at ends. Waise with
overlapping scroll top door in burl cherry with original brass knob, flanked
by spiral carved quarter columns with acanthus carved and turned capitals and
fern carved and turned plinths, front of waiste has unusual quartered circle
sunken inlay with four projecting pointed leaves radiating from it, cove
molding above and below. Base with inset sunken panel with raised square
inside raised rectangle, flanking quarter columns with turned capitals and
plinths, nicely scroll cut-out Hepplewhite feet and apron, poplar secondary
wood, 18 1/2 x 10 1/4 x 91" high. |
