hardwoods including curly maple, walnut and mahogany with drumhead form
bonnet with brass bevels. Waist with curly maple frame, overlapping scroll
top door with thumb molded edge, flanked by walnut quarter columns with
turned capitals and plinths, with inset panel below door in mahogany, cove
molding above and below. Base in fine curly maple including sides with inset

includes an extensive bio of Thomas Moore Jr. of Ipswich, who was born in
1690. Thomas Gainsborough was a
family friend and painted some of his clock. This clock has original cut

strike movement with original weights and pendulum. Case in highly figured
mahogany with Queen Anne style stepped flat top bonnet with intaglio carved
fret work over ogee and cove molded top, tombstone door with attached 3/4
turned columns with cast brass capitals and plinths and quarter columns at
rear, tombstone glazed side lights. Waist with overlapping tombstone form
door with stepped molding surround and cross banding, cove molding above and
angled flat molding below. Base with four book matched inlays in burled
mahogany with cross banded surround over cut-out bracket feet, old cleaned

Tom purchased this clock in 1990
from Greg's Clock Shop, Lima, Ohio, who purchased it from the original owners
the Muechler family who brought it from Penn. in a wagon during the 19th
century. Polychrome painted steel dial with Arabic numeral, phase of the moon
in lunette, with cut-out world hemispheres below, flowers in spandrels,
seconds dial above and calendar aperture below center, original cut steel
hands, signed on face Daniel shade/Summey Town. Brass weight driven English
bell strike movement with original weights and pendulum. Case in cherry with
dovetailed bonnet with broken arch op pediment with carved flower rosette
terminals, reeded plinths and urn and flame carved finial, tombstone door,
flanked bt full turned columns, front and rear with blocked capitals and
plinths, oval glazed side lights. Waist with overlapping tombstone door with
fan carving at top and thumb molded edge, original brass key escutcheon,
flanked by turned ebony quarter columns, cove molding above and below. Base
with raised chamfered cornered panel with nice oval inlay, flanked by turned
ebony quarter columns, over Hepplewhite style scroll cut-out feet, pine
secondary wood, 19 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 81 1/4" high. |

Gawen Brown, Boston Queen Anne Chinoiserie Tall Case Clock |
Gawen Brown was born in England
in 1719 and died in Boston at the age of 82 in 1801. Immigrated to America
sometime before 1749. February 6th, of that year he advertised in The Boston
Evening Post that he was a “…Clock and Watchmaker lately from London, Keeps
his shop at Me. Johnson’s Japanner, in Brattle Street, Boston, near Mr.
Copper’s Meeting House, where he makes and sells all sorts of plain,
repeating and Astronomical Clocks, with cases plain, black walnut, mahogany
or Japann’d or with out.”. Brown served in the Continental Army during the
Revolutionary war, one of his clocks is the tower clock of the Old South
Meeting House in Boston, another is in the old State House. This clock has
square brass dial with raised chapter ring with Roman numerals, seconds dial
above and calendar aperture below center, raised brass keystone shaped plate
below center engraved G. Brown/Boston, cast brass applied open work floral
spandrels with central lidded urn, flanked by spread winged eagles, original
cut steel hands. Brass weight driven English bell strike movement with
original weights and pendulum. Case with original chinoiserie decoration,
undoubtedly done by Mr. Johnson of Boston. Flat topped bonnet, cove molding
at top, square door with original brass knob, flanked by full turned columns
with turned and blocked capitals and plinths, all with bronze painted
scrolling floral decoration. Waiste with overlapping double peaked door with
thumb molded edge with fine painted Chinese garden landscape with figures,
original brass handle, flanked by chamfered corners, painted birds and
butterfly in flight above door, sides with bronzed floral painting, cove
molding above and ogee below. Base with similar Chinese garden landscape
painting with figures, branching floral painting on sides over fine cut-out
bracket feet, pine primary & secondary wood, 19 x 11 1/4 x 80" high. |
