(Ohio/Indiana, 1892 - 1962) 20 3/8" x 28 1/4" oil on canvas of
winter landscape. Signed lower
right, "J. E. Weis." Born in Powell County, Indiana in 1892, Weiss painted regional scenes
of Ohio, still lifes, portraits and French street scenes. He moved at a very young age with his
family to Higginsport, Ohio, and at age nine to Norwood, Ohio. He enrolled in night classes at the
Cincinnati Art Academy and worked during the day until he was able to enroll
full time. At age twenty-two, he
was offered a position on the facility which he held for 38 years. He traveled widely in Europe after
serving in WWI. |

William McKendree Snyder
(Indiana, 1848 - 1930) 10 1/4" x 8 1/4" oil on canvas. Beech trees in Autumn. Signed, "W. McK. Snyder"
lower right. Snyder was one of
the earliest artists to paint in Brown County, Indiana. He specialized in dense forests,
especially beech trees. He fought
in the Civil War on the Union side, and reportedly survived Andersonville
Prisoner-of-War camp. He studied
in Cincinnati, New York, and Philadelphia with George Inness, Albert
Bierstadt, and William Hont. A
wonderful painting in original frame. |

Virgilio Ripari (Italy) Oil

Virgilio Ripari (Italy, 1843 -
1902) 10" x 20" oil on canvas Venetial Street Scene. Signed, "Ripari" lower
right. Virgilio Ripari was born
in the province of Mantlia, Lombardy, Italy. He attended the Academia di Belle Arti
di Brera in Milan and studied uner Guseppe Bertini and Raffaele Casnedi. Ripari soon distinguished himself for
his ability and hard work that earned him numerous awards. Among his admirers was Queen Victoria
of England, for whom he executed several oil paintings and watercolors. He participated in numerous
exhibitions in Italy. Ripari
painted with bright colors which he placed on the canvas jaggedly, in fast
touch. For many years Ripari
suffered from arthritis pain that made it extremely difficult to paint;
however, that did not prevent him from continuing to work. Virgilio Ripari died in Milan on April
11, 1902 at the age of 58. |

several early 20th Century Ohio artists known for paintings of Western
Indians. He studied a the Ohio
Mechanics Institute and at the Cincinnati Art Academy, and with Thomas Noble
at the McMicken Art School. |

O. Conrad Schniering (Wyoming,
1916 - 1986) 16" x 12" oil on masonite painting of Western scene
"Two Horses Fenced In." Signed "O. Conrad Schwiering" lower right. Remnants of an exhibition label on
verso. Conrad Schwiering was an
accomplished Western landscape artist. Awarded the Trustees Gold Medal by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame
and Western Heritage Museum after his one man exhibition of 38 of his
paintings in 1981. This show was
previewed in a book length publication titled, "Painting on the
Square." He was a member of
the National Academy of Western Art. He studied under Robert A. Grahame and Raphael Ullywhite of Denver,
and a the Arts Students League with Charles S. Chapman. After WWII, he settled in Jackson
Hole, Wyoming where he sold more than 1,000 paintings. |
