Nano Reid (Ireland, 1900-1981)
12' x 24" oil on masonite. Titled "Boy With Animal". Signed lower left "Nano
Reid". Also "Nano Reid
Iris Boy With Animal 1953-54" and remnants of label on verso. Nano Reid was born in Drogheda, Co
Louth. In 1920, she went to the
Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. She also studied in Paris and London. She exhibited at the Royal Hibernian
Academy from the 1920's to the 1960's. In 1950, with Nora McGuiness, she represented Ireland at the Venice
Biennale. Nano Reid is known as
one of the finest Irish women painters of the 20th Century. Provenance: Originally
from the estate of Harry E. Hoffman, (1924-2013) He graduated from Indiana
University with a B.A. degree, and began a tour with the US Air Force,
serving in the Signal Corps during WWII. Following his military career, Harry
joined the State Department, working in the Foreign service and purchased
much of his art collection during that time. He traveled around the world
extensively. Following his retirement from the Foreign Service, Harry retired
to Dillsboro in 1981. He was involved with the Contemporary Arts Center in
Cincinnati, Cincinnati Art Museum, and Indianapolis Art Museum. |

lower right "Carl Hoerman". Carl Hoerman was a landscape painter born in Bavaria. He moved to the United States in
1904. He studied architecture in
Chicago in 1909. He later built a
studio and art gallery at Saugatuck, Michigan. he was a member of the Chicago Gallery
Association, the Saugatuck Art Association and the Riverside California Art
Association. In 1927, he and his
wife (also a painter) began making trips to the west and southwest, where he
painted desert, Grand Canyon and mountain scenes. Fine listed artist. |
