Gurine Nilsen (Texas) |
A wonderfully hand carved 19th
century oval wooden bowl with cream painted ground and polychrome painted
floral decoration, signed "Gurine Nilsen, 52." 14" x 20 1/2" x 4"
high. Gurine Nilsen was born in Stavanger, Norway, and immigrated to
Texas. She was known for her
floral watercolors of Texas wildflowers, and created the forerunner of the
Texas native garden in her Clifton Yard. |

hand wrought chain hanger, with wrought iron hanging hook with rattail twist,

high, including chain; & a cylindrical brass whale oil lamp with copper
bottom and chain hanger with brass tag stamped "8", 1 3/4"
diameter & high, less chain. |

Two Early Lighting Devices |
Both 1st half of the 19th
century or earlier, including a wrought iron 4-spot grease lamp with
saw-tooth edging, gimbled central pillar hanger with rat tail twist chain
hanger. Pillar has geometric engraving, 6 1/2" square with 6 1/2"
pillar and 13 1/2" long chain with picket type wrought iron hook at end;
and a wrought copper grease lamp with hinged lid and arched copper handle
riveted to top with chain hanger. 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" x 5 1/4" high, less chain. Both in nice old patina. |

spout burner, 10 1/2" high; and a pettycoat form blown glass lamp with
applied C form handle with copper wheel engraved berry branches and brass
collar with double spout burner, 5 1/2" high. |

& ink on paper, signed on backboard "David Hershey", still-life
of footed goblet with single pink rose branch, with one in bloom and two
other beginning to open, in original ogee frame and cover glass, sight 4 1/2"
x 7 1/2", frame is in original varnish finish, 7 1/2" x 10
1/2" with period brass hanger at top. David Hershey was a Pennsylvania
artist, circa 1840's. For a

H. Ludwig" Nov. 21 & 22, 2005, sale #1235B lot 1312 and the back

Outstanding 1745 Sampler |
Silk on linen with four blocks
of text divided by bands of polychrome florals and matching border. The inscription reads from top to
bottom as follows: "Make much of Precious Time while in your Power/Be careful
well to husband every Hour./For time will come when you shall fore lament/The
unhappy minutes that you have mifpent" 2nd block "If you defire to
worship God arishe/First in the morning pray and last at night/Crave for his
bleffing on your labours all./And in Diflrefs for his Afliflance call.";
3rd block "Return the kindnefles that you recieve/As far as your ability
gives leave./Nothing is more unmammered and rude./Than that vile temper of
Ingatitude." 4th block "By thi singenous Maids/may fee what by
the/needle wrought/may be/Elizabeth Nicks/Ended this sampler/my 14 year of
her/age July 20 1745". Sight 8 1/2" x 11 1/2" in period pine
frame, 10 1/2" x 13 3/4". |
A few scattered holes, colors
still bright and slightly more loss of linen along lower left margins, still
an impressive sampler. |
