(American 1854-1945) Providence, Rhode Island, of cattle at creek in woods, 25" x 30" oil on canvas. Signed lower right. George Arthur Hays was a self taught artist who is widely known for his oils of cattle in a landscape. He was a member of both the Providence Art Club and the Providence Watercolor Club as well as the Copley Society of Boston in 1892. Andrew Melrose painted traditional atmospheric landscapes. Many of his paintings are views of New York state and New Jersey, especially regions of the Hudson River Valley and New York Harbor. His paintings are typically rendered in the romantic-realist style of the Hudson River School. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1868 through 1883, and also exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association.
