Marine trade with heavy cast iron mounts and fixed bale handle, the unusual
thing is it has a cast iron removable plug in the base, which is original to
its making, function unknown, mid-19th century, 8 1/2" diameter x 18"

finish. Bonnet with arch top, scroll cut crest with reeded plinths and three
original brass finials, full fluted columns with brass capitals and plinths,
flanking tombstone arched door with satinwood & ebony string inlay. Waist
with deep cove molding at top and bottom, overlapping door with thumb molded
edge and cross banded inlay. Base with cut-out Hepplewhite feet and matching
cross banded inlay. Painted wooden dial with Roman numerals and signed
"Jonathan Billings/Alton", (Mass.) Seconds dial above and calendar
dial below center, floral painted corners and crest. Wooden 30-hour weight
driven time, strike and date movement with original pendulum & weights,
pine secondary wood, 20 x 10 1/4 x 89" high. |
