CYRUS EDWIN DALLIN (AMERICAN)
BRONZE SCULPTURE |
C.E. Dallin
(Massachusetts/Utah/France, 1861-1944) bronze sculpture. 8 3/4". Titled "Appeal to the Great
Spirit". Inscribed on top of
base "C.E. Dallin 1913", plus "#49, Gorham Co. Founders/OXC/
G.A.C." on back edge of base. Dallin was born in Springville, Utah. He grew up near Paiute and Ute
Indians, exposure which set the course of his career. A sculptor of Indian figures, he
created work that showed Indians as having nobility, dignity, simplicity and
elaborate costumes. In 1879, he
was sponsored to travel to Boston to study with Truman Bartlett. He also met and used "Crow
Indians" as subjects. He
studied in Paris at the Acadamie Julian in 1880 and saw the "Buffalo
Bills Wild West Show" in Paris, further inspiring him to depict western
subjects. Throughout his life he
was an avid defender of the American Indian. |

FRANK DUVENECK (OHIO)

Frank Duveneck (Cincinnati,
Ohio, 1848-1919) 18" x 16" oil on canvas titled "The
Dwarf". Penciled on back
"F. Duveneck". Also
penciled on back "The Dwarf by Frank Duveneck". Frank Duveneck, one of the best known
of Cincinnati painters, was born in Covington, Kentucky. He studied at the Munich Royal Academy
from 1870-1873. In 1874, he
returned to Cincinnati, where he painted portraits and taught art
classes. He then traveled between
Munich, Venice and Florence until 1888. While he experimented with a new style of realism featuring dashing
brushwork. He quickly became a
leader among the large number of students in Munich and worked with such
artists as William Merrit Chase and John Twachtman. Typical paintings by Duveneck of this
period show a strong modeled head of a figure emerging from a dark often not
fully painted background, with a few light or bright highlights. In 1888, he returned to Cincinnati
where from 1900 he taught at the Cincinnati Art Academy. |

Maple with nickeled bezel
surrounding the circular dial set into the 24” x 1.25” x 4.25” high maple
block. The cello dial has an arrow which tells the user how far by degrees

OUTSTANDING INLAID MINIATURE
TABLE SAW |
In beautifully grained walnut
with mahogany and satin wood inlaid 8-pointed star on side of the hand
dovetailed case. Has dovetailed drawer in front with recessed brass handle.
Top has mortised through bread-board ends as does the guide. This piece has fly
wheel for attaching belt, brass, copper and steel mounts, a truly beautiful
piece of craftsmanship by a skilled carpenter or cabinet maker. Size is 9” x
12” x 11.5” high. |
