A barrel form beaker with
presentation inscription reading "John Prince To Gordon Frances
Phelps" and second inscription reading "I Appleton To J. Prince
1816", marked on base "Jones & Ward", 3" diameter x
3.5" high. Jones & Ward were in business together from 1813-16, when
they were joined by John J. Low. This firm later evolved into one of Boston's
most famous silver companies, Shreve Crump & Low. |

"Thun" and city mark of "Ehrenberg, a town in Germany, and
engraved on base "C.F.M.P. 15 Aug. 1838", 4.5 x 5.75" high,

Important Kentucky Gorham
Sterling Presentation Loving Cup |
Loving cup has three grape vine
handles with grape leaf terminals, with engraved portait of Albert Berry on
one side and presentation
inscription on the other reading "Presented To Hon. Albert S. Berry M.C.
By The Citizens of Carrollton, Ky. In recognition of his service in securing
for them a Federal Building April, 27th, 1899". Berry (1836-1908) was
Born in Dayton, Ky., graduated
from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, in 1855 and from the Cincinnati Law
School in 1858. He served as prosecuting attorney of Newport, Kentucky, in
1859. He served in the Confederate States Marine Corps throughout the Civil
War. He served five terms as mayor of Newport, beginning in 1870. He served
as member of the Kentucky Senate in 1878 and 1884. Berry was elected as a
Democrat to the Fifty-third and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4,
1893-March 3, 1901). He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in
1900. Marked on base with Gorham mark and "Sterling A231 7
Pint." 9"
diameter x 10.75" high. Weight 60.25 ozt. The "M.C." in inscription is referencing
his service as a Confederate Marine Corp as a 2nd Lt. serving on the CSS
Charleston, a casemate ironclad ram, used to defend the port city of
Charleston until the city was overrun by Union forces and she was destroyed
to prevent her capture. There were only 45 officers in the CMC during the
Civil War. |
