Coles Phillips (Ohio/New York)
Hand Painted Lithograph |
Clarence Coles Phillips
(Ohio/New York, 1880-1927) Sight 24" x 17" lithograph on board with
applied gouache. Born in Springfield, Ohio, Phillips was the first to
introduce Art Peco styles into advertising design. His illustrations
appeared on the covers of several magazines, Saturday
Evening Post, Life, Good Housekeeping, and more. In
1908, he created a magazine cover which was to become his signature, his trademark "The Fadeaway
Girl." Some historians give
credit to Phillips for the first, "Pin-Up Girl." His graphic images of womer were so
popular that several books were published just of these images. Phillips died at the young age of 47
in New Rochelle New York. |
