William McKendree Snyder (Madison, Indiana, 1848-1930) 12 x 20 oil on canvas of beech trees. Signed lower right "W. Mck. Snyder". William McKendree Snyder was one of the earliest artist to paint in Brown Co., Indiana in the 1870s. Snyder was born in Liberty, Indiana in 1848. He settled permanently in Madison, Indiana, where he specialized in dense forests, especially beech trees. He studied in Cincinnati, New York, and Philadelphia. Snyder fought in the Civil War on the Union side and reportedly survived the infamous Andersonville prisoner-of-war camp. One of Indiana's premier artists. Fine condition and in original frame. Edward Henry Potthast Jr. II (Cincinnati, Ohio and New York, New York, 1880-1941) 10 1/2" x 15 1/2" watercolor of landscape with river and cattle. Signed lower left "Potthast II". Edward Potthast Jr. was a painter and teacher. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and was the nephew of Edward Henry Potthast (1857-1927) with whom he studied. They painted together in Edward Potthast's New York City Studio for years. The two men hung side by side at exhibitions starting in 1911. Edward Potthast Jr. remained in New York until the 1920's when he moved back to Cincinnati, Ohio. There he taught commercial art at the Ohio Mechanic Institute. Potthast Jr. exhibited with the American Watercolor Society and the Cincinnati Art Museum. Listed in Davenports, Fieldings, etc. Fine condition. EST. $500. - $1500.
