ERNEST "POPEYE" REED FOLK ART SCULPTURE PLAQUE |
Outstanding sandstone folk art sculpture plaque of Daniel Boone in buckskin and coonskin cap with long rifle and belt, ax in hand and powder horn hanging from belt, standing above an Indian lying face down with his bow in hand, obviously just dispatched by Boone. Ernest "Popeye" Reed (1919-1985) was born in Jackson, Ohio. By 1964 he was selling his carvings as tourist items by the roadside. In 1968, he was able to become a full time artist. He began showing his work in various places including state fairs. In 1980, Reed was featured in Folk Art Encyclopedia of Twentieth Century American Folk Art & Artists. Found in Chillicothe, Ohio from family who personally purchased from Popeye Reed. This is a great Popeye Reed sculpture plaque. Unsigned. Fine old patina, chip along lower left border, otherwise good condition. 16" h x 14 3/4" w x 1 1/4" thick. |
