Pair of Folk Art Paintings |
A pair portraits attributed to
Zedekiah Belknap 1781-1858 of New England, circa 1820, of a young married
couple, each facing in different directions. Belknap, a preacher and itenerant
artist, noted for his many portraits of residents of Mass., N.H. and N.Y. in
the 1st quarter of the 19th century. A graduate of Dartmouth noted for his
method of using red to line one side of the sitters nose, and making the
cheeks rose colored with round eyes, as well as using a minimum number of
brush strokes on his portraits faces, and these fit those traits completely,
as well as bearing an amazing likeness to his known works. Each are in circa
1810-20 clothing and the lady has a broach and necklace, with lovely painted
lace bonnet and collar, and holding a branch with two apricots or peaches.
Both are oil on canvas in matching period gild frames, canvas is 23 x
29" and frames are 30 x 36". |
