Outstanding Soap Hollow Youth
Size Decorated Corner Cupboard |
This wonderful 60" high small size
corner cupboard attributed to John Sala in dark red grain painted ground with
various floral and star/geometric stencils on frame of cupboard with black
cove molding top with stenciled floral returns, over single black door with
stencils on frame and four panes of glass, with brass lock and two shelves,
over cut-out pie shelf, over single overlapping dovetailed drawer in black
paint with brass pull, over single paneled door with black panel with floral
stencils, and brass lock, scroll
cut-out feet, 25 stencils in total. Attributed to John Sala in the paint scheme and color used by him on a signed stepback cupboard with
stenciled urns with tulips that match a blanket chest by him that is dated
1851 (see C.R. Muller 2002, pp 19 & 72 ). Great corner cupboard in
wonderful untouched patina, 34 1/2 x 17 x 60 1/4" high. |

edge with thumb molding, cabriole legs with acanthus carved knees and
Philadelphia style claw & ball feet, all in old varnish finish, original
added bracket on lower rear seat rails (trait typical of Philad. chairs),
original quarter round front glue blocks (typical of Philad. chairs) at seat
rails, four small chisel notches on interior back of seat rail, 17 x 22 1/2 x
37 1/2" high, seat at 17 1/4". |
Rear glue blocks in seat rail
are not original, likely never had these (a trait typical of Philad. Chairs),
but have been added at a later date, small patch at back of stiles at seat
rail, else Fine. |

mullions, each with 12 panes, solid ends, barrel form ring turned feet.
Interior with unusual stepped shelves, all in original old varnish finish, 75
x 18 x 80" high. Family states that this piece descended in the family
of Ann Rudolph Smith, daughter of Rev. William Smith, D.D., first Provost of
Academy of Philadelphia, which in 1779 became the University of Penn. He was
an opponent of Benjamin Franklin, founder and first president of Washington
College in Maryland. |
