1896 CUSTER'S LAST FIGHT
ANHEUSER BUSCH SIGN |
In original gold painted gesso
frame, with “Anheuser-Busch/St. Louis” cast in gesso at top. This
chromolithograph is dated in lower left “Entered According to an Act of
Congress by Adolphus Bush March 30th 1896, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at
Washington, D.C.”. There is extensive printed text below the battle scene
detailing what was happening above, and about the original painting, and two
small vignettes below with left having 7th Cavalry flags,
crossed sabers, bugle and medal with “Custer” and right with Little Big Horn
battlefield monument with mounted Indian at side, 32.5”x 42”, frame is 38.5 x
48”. |
Some touch up on frame and gesso
loss, chromo with small areas of loss and 3”tear along left margin. |

hammer “1864” with steel folding rear and standing front sights. Barrel
marked along left side with inspectors mark Lock plate marked
“U.S./Springfield” with U.S. shield breasted eagle and “1864” behind hammer.
Full walnut stock with both sling swivels, steel trigger guard, barrel bands,
end cap and butt plate, total length 56”. Socket type bayonet marked “11 T.
& W.W.”, total length 21”. |

Includes unmarked socket type steel bayonet, total length 21.8”. |

edged steel blade with “U.S.” and other patriotic military motifs. Marked on
left ricasso “J.H. Wilson Phil’a. Pa.” with cast brass one piece quillon,
guard/knuckle bow with spread winged, U.S. shield breasted eagle on guard and
floral scroll on bow and lion mask on quillon. Cast brass pommel with U.S.
shield breasted spread winged eagle and shield on reverse, end cap with
floral design matching front/rear collars also in cast brass with floral
scroll. Sharp/ray skin wrapped grip with braided wire wrap, total length 35”.
Brass scabbard with cast throat and top band with 2 carrying rings, middle
band with single ring and cast drag with star, total length 31.5”. |

EARLY SWORD CANE |
Crook type with tapered birch
shaft/scabbard with old rubber ferrule. Cane has hidden push-button release
allowing the trefoil tapered blued and gilt decorated 17” steel blade to be
removed. Blade is marked “Toledo” and decorated with floral scroll work. Grip
is the crook handle of cane, total length less scabbard/shaft is 24”. Total
length in scabbard/shaft is 35.25”. |

lbs. P. (Paul) Marker (1811-1875)
son of Paul Marker (1793-1865) of Sharpsburg, MD, gun maker in Gratis, OH,
Darke Co., from 1850 to 1869 then moved to Versailles, OH and Union City, IN,
where he operated with his brother Dan until his death. Top of the barrel marked "P.
Marker" in flowing script. Barrel by J. (Jacob) Wilt, Native of Chambersburg, PA, son of Jeremiah
Wilt, came to Dayton, OH in 1832. Listed as barrel maker located on the south side of Smith St. at Brown
St., Dayton, OH. Died in
1882. Barrel marked on bottom
flat "J. Wilt, Dayton, OH" in two lines. Percussion lock by H. (Henry) Elwell of Seneca Co., OH. Little information survives as to his
history. Known to have made locks
or sold locks. Possibly imported
from Birmingham, England and stamped with his name and "Warrented"
on the face of the plate ahead of the hammer. |
Brass wire wrapped repair at
neck of stock, some chips to stock, nice brown patina with light pitting near
hammer. |
