Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier
Watercolor of Napoleon |
A fine pen and ink with
watercolor of Napoleon on horseback by well listed artist Jean-Louis-Ernest
Meissonier (1815-1891) This artwork is similar to Meissonier's famous
painting of Napoleon on horseback. Jean Meissonier born in Lyon was the most
famous and successful painter of the 19th century. He represented the conservatism of the
French Academy, the force defied by impressionists who led the
modernism. His paintings
brought very high prices and he spent lavishly on personal possessions. He
was awarded 3 times the Grand Medal of Honor, which was unprecendented and in
1889 he received the Grand Cross which was the highest honor of the Legion
Honor , this was the first time this award was given to an artist. His
favorite painting subject was Emperor Napolean. signed and dated 1863, lower
