Rare American 1769 Patriotic Imprint |
A 2.75” x 3.75” playing card,
printed by John Holt on heavy laid paper card stock with American patriotic
imprint on the back of a black printed four of clubs playing card entitled,
“A CARD,” and fourteen lines of text below reading “JACK Hatchway, and Tom
Bowling, return their Service to Messrs. Axe and Hammer, and the respecta-ble
body of Leather Aprons. acquainting them, that they keep a good look out, and
hope (with the assistance of their Old Friends, the Men of Straw) to run
clear of the Shoals, and Mudbanks, and escape the designs of those Men of
Faction, M—r—y, and Br—sh—r. As also avoid the Reef
of Combination, on which feeds a very furious Animal, known by the Name of a
certain Candidate and Lawyer, who watches to overset them; but being
expe-rienc’d Seamen, hope to divert him by throwing over a few empty
Water-Casks, ‘till they Weather every Diffi-culty, and get safe into Port.
Ship Liberty, January 18, 1769.” This imprint, with its many cryptic
references, relates to the British government's introduction of The Stamp Act
of 1765, and the Townshend Acts of 1767, which lead to the seizure, in 1768,
of John Hancock's ship, Liberty, by Crown custom officials in Boston harbor
for smuggling. He was defended by the future 2nd President of the United
States, John Adams, and, while the charges were eventually dropped, the crown
officials later brought many other charges against Hancock. These actions by
Crown officials eventually lead Hancock to organize a boycott of the East
India Company, culminating in the Boston Tea Party. Jack Hatchway and Tom
Bowling are characters from a 1751 novel by Tobias Smollett entitled The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle.
“The Men of Straw” refers to the Irish voters of N.Y. who, earlier has been
referred to by T. Smith as poor beggars, had come over on a bed of straw. It
primary aim was opposing the election of lawyers to the New York Assembly in
1769, who were viewed as supporting the Crown laws. Reference: American Bibliography; A chronological Dictionary of all
Books, Pamphlets and Periodicals Printed in the United States of America.
1765-1773, by Charles Evans, Blakeley Press, 1903.
This publication lists this imprint as a 32mo pamphlet, which is playing card
sized. John Holt (1721-1784) edited The New York
Journal, or General
Advertiser and other papers from 1760 on. An
