Automaton Battle of Waterloo
Tall Case Clock |
This fine Scottish clock from
North Lanarkshire, circa 1815 has a polychrome painted steel arch top dial
with wonderful automated battle scene in arch showing an advancing column of
British troops with flying colors and cannon at left, a British office mounted
on a white horse with drawn sword, that is automated to rock back and forth
and trampling two fallen French officers with retreating column of French
soldiers at right. Spandrels decorated with polychrome painted allegorical
female figures representing the four seasons. Dial with Roman numerals with
second hand dial above and calendar dial below the ornate cut-out and
engraved brass hour & minute hands. Brass weight drive, time, strike and
calendar movement with original weights and pendulum. Fine mahogany case with
flat top bonnet with cove molded crown, tombstone door atop waist with cove
molding at top and base and overlapping door with thumb molded edge and
inlaid diamond shaped key hole escutcheon, flanked by turned quarter columns
with turned capital & plinth. Base with scroll cut bracket feet, all in
old likely original varnish finish. 9 1/4" x 21 1/2" x 84 1/4" high. |
