Rare & Important Autographed Baseball Cdv Photo of Al Pratt |
A 4" x 2 1/2", Circa
1868, CDV of Al Pratt in full uniform holding his cap, signed on the back -
Compliments of AG Pratt Base Ball Pitcher Pittsburgh Pa.. Al Pratt, nicknamed
"Uncle Al" was the starting pitcher for the Cleveland Forest Cities
in the very first Big League (National Association) professional game held at
Ft. Wayne Indiana on May 4, 1871. In 1880 Pratt founded the first major
league club in Pittsburgh, the Alleghenys (later named the Pirates) and
became the first manager in 1882. He managed the Portsmouth Ohio Riverside
Club in 1868 and we believe this is the time period of the photo and
therefore the "R" on
his uniform. Pratt was born in 1848 in Allegheny, Pa & was a veteran of
the Civil War. He compiled a 12-26 record in 43 Professional games Pratt hit
.262 and .277 for Cleveland in 1871-1872. He was an organizer of the Union
Association, and a part owner of the National League Pittsburgh club in 1890
during the Players League revolt. He was a National League umpire in 1879-80
and later an American Association umpire. Pratt was a popular old timer and
even played a prominent part of the Pirates celebration of the Centenary of
the National League in 1936. Al died in 1937 and was buried in his Grand Army
of the Republic uniform. A very important and rare image that was found at an
Estate auction near Portsmouth Ohio, several years ago. A rare opportunity to
purchase an historic pre 1870 baseball photograph. A fine history of Pratt - Al Pratt:
Present at the Creation by David Pietrusza is available on the author's
website.
