LTD/59 Frenchurch St. London, in brass gimbaled case with tools, mounted in
mahogany case with brass mounts and label on front reading H. Hughes &
Son LTD/1369/8344/London. Push button top lid release for viewing with glass
cover, key locked second lid for access to clock, 7 1/4" x 7 1/4" x
7 1/2" high. Clock comes with partially printed ships record listing
Hughes in ink as chronometer maker for yacht Olive K, captain O'Shanghnessy,
dated May 11, 1932, cleaned & repaired by T.S. & J.D. Negus, N.Y. The
yacht Olive K was built for Charles F. Kettering in 1927 by Defoe. The yacht
was a 172 foot twin screw diesel. Charles F. Kettering was the founder of
Delco and the head of research for General Motors and one of the periods
foremost inventors. |

Circa 1800-10, Shelf clock with
round repainted dial with Roman numerals, signed N. Munroe with original cut
steel hands. Black field below dial with polychrome painted floral swags.
Brass weight driven time only movement with original weight and pendulum.
Case in mahogany with cove molded pediment with square fluted plinth topped
with brass spiked urn finial with cast brass spread winged eagle atop, over
kidney form door with stepped cove molding below. Base with highly figured
crotch mahogany front with two cross banded edges with smaller in bleached
mahogany, over fine ogee bracket feet, pine secondary wood, old refinish with
good color, 13 1/4" x 6 3/4" x 35" high. The Munroe brothers
were apprenticed to Simon Willard in Boston. Daniel left first to Concord and
was shortly followed by his brothers Nathaniel and William. They were some of
the first clock makers in this town. |

Gorham coin silver with lion,
anchor and "G" hallmarks over "510" over retailer stamp
"Harry R. Smith & Co." This wonderful silver pitcher has full
young woman bust in classical drapes on handle, Greek key and acanthus engraving,
front with presentation inscription reading "Presented To/John
Robinson/by/Faran & McLean propititers of the Cincinnati Enquirer/as a
token of their/Graditude for his devoton & friendship/during the dark
period of the last/Four Year/Cincinnati Sept. 7th, 1865". Pitcher is 8 x
6 x 12" high, total 44.10 ozt. John Robinson was the founder of the John
Robinson Circus, out of Terrace Park, Ohio, at one time the largest American
circus with the most animals in any show. James J. Faran & Washington
McLean were co-owners of the Cincinnati Enquirer from circa 1840-65, and of
course the "dark period of the last Four Years" refers to the
American Civil War. These Robinson family silver items were in
the family for over 150 years. |
