Monumental Early Rookwood M. L.
Nichols Floor Aladdin Vase |
This large 22" early
Rookwood vase we feel is one of the series of Aladdin vases Marie Longworth
Nichols first created in 1880, this is the same form as the famous Aladdin
vase she did in 1882 in an attempt to out do Mary Louise Mclaughlin. There is
a picture of Maria Longsworth Nichols studio at Rookwood in 1881 of the same
form Aladdin vase with similar decoration in the Book
Rookwood Pottery The Glorious Gamble , page 12.
This vase is decorated with painted poppies and baby Kingfisher, there is a
painted A or symbol on the bottom possibly for size not artist, At this time
there were only a couple artist allowed to work on vases this size and only
one that could get by without signing it and of corse that would be the owner
Maria L. Nichols, with the form
the similar decoration and size we feel stongly it is diffently the work of
Maria Longsworth Nichols. The vase is marked with block letters ROOKWOOD with
no date mark. 22" h x 12 1/2" w. |
