Smith (1882-1971) 15 3/4" x 13" oil on board. Titled and signed
"Fashing, Wilhelm" lower left. Signed and titled on verso,
"For Ray Landon- Fasching by Mrs. Lillian "Wilhelm" Smith,
painted in 1909 before my marriage to Jesse - My best to you always, Lillian
Dec. 25, 1937." She studied at the National Academy of Design, Arts
Student League, Columbia University, and The Leonia School of Art in New
Jersey. In 1912 her cousin-in-law, Zane Grey, got her backstage at Buffalo
Bill's "Wild West Show" in New York, where she was able to paint
the Indians. She was fascinated with the West, and traveled with Grey to
Arizona in 1913 to illustrate his book The Rainbow Trail. She also illustrated The Border
Legion in 1916. She was the first and only woman to
illustrate western novels by Zane Grey. She traveled throughout Arizona and married her cowboy-husband, Jesse
Smith. She painted landscapes and
the occasional Indian portrait, and exhibited widely. Unframed. |

Hugo Zacchine and family began working for the Ringling Brothers, Barnum
& Bailey Circus in 1929. Also
included is a lot of 6, including four 14 x 22” heavy card stock chromos from
“Zuhrah Shrine Circus, printed in Minn.; plus a 14 x 40” poster from the same
circus, all circa 1950’s and printed by the American Printing Co.,
Minneapolis; and a limited edition print published by Casa Di Zacchini Inc.
of a clown signed in print Hugo Zacchini and autographed in pencil by two of
his daughters Olympia & Silvia Zacchini, 14.3 x 18”. Provenance: From an estate in which was originally

Carl Lewis Pappe (Ohio/Mexico,
1900 - 1998) 30" x 24" oil on masonite of a Tasco village
scene. Signed, "Carl Pappe -
Taxco," lower left. Carl Pappe
was born in Hungary in 1900. He
showed an early interest in drawing. When he was five years old, his father imigrated to the United States. Six years later, they were reunited in
Lorain, Ohio. From 1921 to 1925,
he attended the Cleveland School of Art. He enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts through a
scholarship by The Hungarian Society. He studied under Hugh Brechenridge and Daniel Garber from 1925 to
1926. Pappe visited Mexico City
in 1934 where he met his future wife, Bernice Goodspeed, who became a
designer of silver jewelry and authored a book on Mexican folklore,
illustrated by Pappe. He was
friends wtih contemporaries Diego Rivera, Carlos Merida, Juan O'Gormand and
Ruffino Tamayo. He was an admirer
and friend of the sculptor, Isamu Noguchi. He settled in Tasco, in the Sierra
Madre Mountains. His Taxco street
scenes are among the collections at the Library of Congress. Well listed artist. |

(Minnesota/Texat, 1857-1949) 17" x 13" watercolor on paper, still
life scene of padlock and chain with copper tea pot. Signed, "For Fred
Calhous - Fellow artist and friend." "N. R. Brewer, 1909,"
lower left. Nicholas Brewer was a prolific landscape and portrait artist.
He received his early trainin in Rochester before studying with Dwight Tyron
and Charles Noel Flagg in New York City. He was a member of teh American
Federation of Arts, The Salmagundi Club, and the California Art Club.
Exhibions included the Minnesota Art Society, Minnesota Art Institute, Museum
of Fine Arts in Houston, and Carnegie Institute in Pittsburg. Brewer wrote
an autobiography, Traits of A Paintbrush, published in 1938. |
