Joseph G. Chandler Folk Art
Portrait |
Joseph Goodhue Chandler
(1813-188), born in South Hadley, Mass., married Lucretia Ann Waites
(1820-1868) who was already an established artist and the two collaborated in
many if not most of the paintings signed by Joseph. This seated half length
portrait of a young blonde haired boy holding an open book with black shirt
with lace collar and tall grass in background is typical of many of
Chandler's portraits of young children. Inscribed on back: Painted for Samuel
W. Hand Aged 6 years/J.G. Chandler, Artist March 1842, 20 x 24" in
original gilt frame, 24 1/2 x 28 1/2". This painting was last sold at
Garth's Auction, lot 428 of the Mary Thornton Auction, Jan. 9 & 10, 1976. |
