Russian Folk Art Carved Box |
Bass or lindwood with hinged lid
carved with relief Russian village scene, blue bell flowers wrapped in
scrolled ribbon with TOBOLSZK carved on ribbon, opens to interior carved with
high relief vining roses, hand painted in rose and green, over false drawer
with carved floral face on rear and secret drawer with similar carving on
front. When the top is open there is a central high relief carved rose, which
is removable and a stop to lock the secret drawer. All carved from single
piece of wood, 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 x 3" high. Tobolsk is a town on the banks
of the river Irtis in in Siberia, and this piece is likely a exiled prisoners
work. |
