McKendree Snider (Madison, Indiana, 1848-1930) 9" x 12" oil on

right. William Meeker Snyder was one
of the earliest artist to paint in Brown Co., Indiana in the 1870s. Snyder was born in Liberty, Indiana in
1848. He settled permanently in
Madison, Indiana, where he specialized in dense forests, especially beech
trees. He studied in Cincinnati, New
York, and Philadelphia. Snyder fought
in the Civil War on the Union side and reportedly survived the infamous
Andersonville prisoner-of-war camp.
One of Indiana's premier artists.
