Truly outstanding miniature
painting by Benjamin Davis, done in 1803 of Ann Rudolph Smith and her two
sons. She holds a letter in her hand with manuscript text reading, "Ann R Smith" and the
backboard has a period pasted paper label reading, "Painted by Bnj.
Davis/1803." The boy in blue is William Rudolph Smith and in red is ?
Smith. They are the grandsons of Rev. William Smith, D.D., first Provost of
Academy of Philadelphia, which in 1779 became the University of Penn. He was
an opponent of Benjamin Franklin, founder and first president of Washington
College in Maryland. |

Including an engraving of Rev.
William Smith, D.D., invited by Ben Franklin to be the first Provost of
Academy of Philadelphia, which, in 1779, became the University of
Pennsylvania. He was later an
opponent of Benjamin Franklin, and suspected of loyalist sympathies, founder
and first president of Washington College in Maryland. Framed, 7 1/4" x
10"; plus a partially printed manuscript card stock card from the
American Revolution reading, "Philadelphia Assembly, 1781./The Favor of
Miss B.W. Smith/Company is requested for the Season./J.M. Nesbitt,/J.

Rare 18th Century Paper Filigree
Tea Caddy |
This elongigated hexagonal form
caddy has most of its surface covered with rolled paper in imitation of metal
filigree work. This example has various colored papers and gilt edged papers
in use, and the different panels have flowering vases, vining flowers and
Scottish thistle, lid with similar design and front has a truly lovely and
finely painted miniature painting of a young brother and sister in 18th
century dress with her holding a pigeon. Each panel and lid had clear glass
covers to protect it, but several are now missing and some panels have
damage. Interior with original lid and lining. 8" x 4 1/4" x 5
1/4" high. |
