Early Nebraska Pieced Quilt |
With provenance. Two pieces (see
inscription below) in solid colors and early calico prints, each square has
embroidered male name, including many members of the Biles family including
the following initials C., H.S., E.T., O., J., E., L.D., S., G.V., J.P.,
M.C., M., Wm., A.D., & F.N. The next most frequent name is Baldwin with
N., A., & G.V., followed by Summer, C., T., & P., other names include
E. & H. Stove, G. Vanuken, C. Coleman, M.C. Schoonover, E. Wells, G.M.
Moody, M.G. Lee, J.E. & G. Chamberlin, & E. Frazer. Size is 83 x
76" with smaller piece being 43 x 53". Attached typed note reads
Made by my Great Grandmother on my mother's side, between 1844-1858. Names on
quilt were male relatives and boyfriends. Cross-stitch is done free hand over
the weave of the cloth. Small piece of quilt was cut off for her first
grandchild, my mother Virginia Lee Mutz in 1902 |

house, ship and more with center panel dated 1842 and lower panels signed Anna
Reinpacker, oval 11 x 8 1/2" mounted in original ebonized and gilt
frame, 13 1/2 x 11". |
