RARE ROYCROFTER'S ELBERT HUBBARD LETTERS & BOOK |
Rare April 28, 1915 Elbert Hubbard Letter Predicting His Demise on the Lusitania, plus an October 1914 TLS and a signed copy of the "Roycroft Dictionary". Each letter, 1p, typed on 8.5" x 11" paper, "East Aurora" which is in Erie County, New York. Both addressed to Mr. C.H. Clark, Advertising Manager for the Robbins & Myers Co., Springfield, Ohio. In the first letter, dated April 28, 1915, Hubbard discusses his trip overseas: Saturday of this week, May First, I board the "Lusitania" and sail for Europe. The Foreign Authorities have been very kind to me. I will be given an opportunity to observe Conditions As Are. Aboard I will represent myself, and I will edit my own Copy. I Intend to store it in my Bean, and in that way elude the Censor! When I get back, if I do, I will give it to the Readers of THE FRA and The PHILISTINE - straight. I aim to be a Reporter - not a War Correspondent. (Raus mit der Puttees!) I will write about what I see; only that. You know what this Inside Stuff will do for my Magazines' Circulation! I will return June 20th, perhaps... I may meet a Mine or a Submarine Over There. Or I may hold friendly converse with a Stray Bullet in the Trenches. But in that event Felix agrees to cancel your Order. But in order to cancel it we must have it. Your sincere, Elbert Hubbard Elbert and his wife, Alice, boarded the "Lusitania" on May 1, 1915, and they died together when the ship was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine "Unterseeboot 20" on May 7, 1915. In the second TLS, dated October 19, 1914, Hubbard expresses his thanks to C.H. Clark and his wife for hosting him during his visit to the "Robbins & Myers Company" in Springfield, Ohio. The letters are accompanied by a 1914 copy of "The Roycrofter Dictionary", inscribed on the free front end paper to a previous owner by Elbert Hubbard, dated October 13, 1914. Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) was an American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. He founded Roycroft, and Arts and Crafts movement community, in East Aurora, New York, in 1885. The Roycrofters produced fine books, often printed on handmade paper, operated a bindery and a furniture shop, and made leather and copper goods. Hubbard edited and published two magazines, referenced in the first letter, "The Philistine" and "The Fra". Over time, he also became a popular lecturer. |
