Frank Duveneck (Cincinnati, Ohio, 1848-1919) 22" x 18" oil on canvas of lady.Attribution unsigned.Frank Duveneck, one of the best known of Cincinnati painters, was born in Covington, Kentucky.He studied at the Munich Royal Academy from 1870-1873.In 1874, he returned to Cincinnati, where he painted portraits and taught art classes.He then traveled between Munich, Venice, & Florence until 1888, where he experimented with a new style of realism featuring dashing brushwork.He quickly became a leader among the large number of students in Munich and worked with such artists as William Merrit Chase and John Twachtman.Typical paintings by Duveneck of this period show a strong modeled head of figure emerging from a dark often not fully painted background, with a few light or bright highlights.In 1888, he returned to Cincinnati where from 1900 he taught at the Cincinnati Art Academy.Fine condition.EST. $1000. - $3000.
