GREAT CHERRY BUTLER'S DESK WITH CURLY MAPLE INTERIOR |
A wonderful cherry desk/chest combination with cutout splash back with finial and two drawers above. The desk contains nine drawer above. The desk contains nine small curly maple front drawers and flip up door with compartment and another small curly maple drawer inside. Three 12 1/2" wide small drawers with cherry crotch veneer and hidden locking mechanisms above the desk and three graduating drawers with banded mahogany and cherry crotch veneer, below the desk. Rope turned columns resting on tall turned reeded feet. Walnut, pine and poplar secondary woods. Signed in pencil in top drawer "W. Ellison, Hanging Rock, O." (small town near Ironton) for the owner William Ellison (1796-1865) who made his fortune as manager of his cousin's iron furnace near Ironton and returned to Manchester and built "The Ridge". There is also a small town just north of Ironton named Ellisonville, probably after one of the Ellison's. A fine desk with great provenance of quality workmanship by a leading Ohio or Kentucky cabinet maker. Ca. 1840.
